Statement on TEA’s Continued Intervention in Houston ISD from Veronica Garcia, executive director of Houstonians for Great Public Schools

Today’s announcement from the Texas Education Agency confirms that the state intervention in Houston ISD will continue. As an organization committed to strong public schools and accountable leadership, we recognize the progress that has been made — particularly in student academic outcomes. That progress is meaningful, but we also know it is not enough.

The path forward must include deeper, more transparent engagement with the communities that HISD serves. Families, educators, and students deserve to be part of shaping the decisions that affect their schools and their futures. Real transformation will require collaboration — not just from the district itself – but from all of us who care about public education in Houston.

We also want to acknowledge and thank the outgoing board members for their public service, and we welcome the new board members stepping into leadership. The work ahead will not be easy, but it is critical. We look forward to working alongside all stakeholders to ensure Houston’s students receive the education they need to thrive and achieve long-term economic mobility.
