Houston GPS Commends HISD Board Approval of the Texas Excellence Evaluation System

HOUSTON – March 20, 2025 –  Veronica Garcia, executive director for Houstonians for Great Public Schools, issued the following statement after the Houston ISD Board unanimously approved the Texas Excellence Evaluation System at the board’s meeting Thursday:

“The most significant driver of student learning is quality instruction from an effective educator, making teacher evaluation, feedback, and support critical in education,” said Veronica Garcia, executive director for Houstonians for Great Public Schools. “To achieve the academic and postsecondary goals set by the Houston ISD Board, implementing a comprehensive evaluation system and professional development strategy is vital.

The new Teacher Excellence System developed by HISD includes key evidence-based components, such as measures focused on student growth and a rigorous evaluator certification process to ensure consistency and fairness. Houston GPS commends the Board for approving this robust educator evaluation system and looks forward to its integration with differentiated professional development to better support educators and, ultimately, our students.

Clear and thoughtful implementation of this system will be essential to its success. Ensuring that educators fully understand the process, expectations, and available supports will maximize its impact and build trust.

This system is an important step forward in ensuring that all students in Houston receive the high-quality education they deserve.”
