Houston GPS Supports Sending HISD Bond Proposal to Voters

HISD Board will decide on August 8th whether to send decision to the voters in November.

Houstonians for Great Public Schools (Houston GPS), the leading organization advocating for student centered policies in HISD, strongly supports sending the proposed 2024 HISD bond to the voters in November, citing needed investment in health and safety for HISD students and preparation for the future with new career and technical education centers.

The proposed bond would provide funding for essential improvements, including upgrades to existing infrastructure across campuses and enhanced safety measures for students. If approved by the Board on August 8th, the bond will be placed on the November 5th ballot, putting the decision in the hands of Houston families and voters at the polls. Houston ISD has not offered a bond for consideration on the ballot since 2012.

“Sending this bond proposal to the ballot in November is a critical step forward to ensure our students, regardless of their neighborhood, are learning in healthy and secure environments that are prepared for the future,” said Veronica Garcia, Executive Director of Houston GPS. “We urge the HISD Board to approve putting this on the ballot and trust the voters on making the right decision on this important and overdue initiative to benefit our students.”

If passed in November, the bond will not result in any tax increase. All funds are legally required to be designated solely for projects identified in the bond proposal. The bond money will be equitably allocated using the Facilities Condition Index (FCI) to determine campus needs, including bathroom and HVAC improvements, security enhancements, and more.
