Houston ISD Election Update: Districts II and VIII Unopposed

Last Thursday, September 14, 2023, the Houston ISD Board of Managers voted to cancel the elections in trustee districts II and VIII because candidates in both districts are running unopposed.

In January, Harold Anthony “Savant” Moore and Plácido Gómez will serve as trustees for district II and VIII respectively. We appreciate their willingness to serve the HISD community and congratulate them on their new positions. To get to know our future trustees, we’ve put together brief biographies below.

Meet Savant Moore, District II

Savant Moore is a father of three HISD students, who attend Wheatley High School and McReynolds Middle School. Moore earned a bachelor’s degree in History from Howard University and an MBA from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He is currently seeking his Master of Divinity from Houston Christian University.

Moore currently works in the trucking industry and is a minister with the Greater Morning Star Baptist Church. He previously served for six years in the U.S. Army. A self-described “serial entrepreneur,” Moore is a former business owner, software engineer, and manager.

Meet Plácido Gómez, District VIII

Plácido Gómez is a former educator, who taught math in San Antonio and later at IDEA Public Schools in the Rio Grande Valley. He has a bachelor’s degree in Mathematical Economic Analysis from Rice University and later earned his Master’s in Education Policy and Management from Harvard University.

Gomez previously served as a Program Director with Leadership ISD Harris County and as a Project Director with Safal Partners, where he worked on school redesign grants, managed teams of teachers as part of the state’s review process for instructional materials, and conducted a needs analysis for a federal Migrant Education Program.
