Trustee Report Cards
November 12, 2020
On Thursday, November 12, the Houston ISD Board of Education met for its monthly public business meeting. Given the number of community members registered to speak at the meeting, the board chose to forgo the progress monitoring report to allow sufficient time. The academic update, originally scheduled to be presented in March 2020, would have provided a bit of insight into student academic progress before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope the Board will revisit this update in the weeks to come. Also on the agenda were consideration of offering Dr. Grenita Lathan the official role as Superintendent and consideration of entering into a national Superintendent search. The presence of both of these items on the agenda is a clear indication of conflicting views on how the Board proceeds with installing a permanent chief executive. This conflict has led to major turmoil in the district in the past, both during and after meetings. The Board should be commended for their ability to conduct a measured, student-focused discussion. They ultimately decided to pursue a national search, and we anticipate hearing more details about that process next month.
We also want to note that Thursday was Trustee Wanda Adams’ last meeting as a Houston ISD Trustee. We want to thank her for all of her hard work and dedication to the students of the district, and we congratulate her on her new position as Justice of the Peace, Precinct 7 Place 1.
