Trustee Report Cards
October 8, 2020
On Thursday, October 8, the Houston ISD Board of Education met for its monthly public meeting. While the agenda for this month was relatively light, the Board did approve taking the next step towards becoming a designated District of Innovation (DOI) by approving appointments to the DOI Committee. The committee consists of 15 members, including one appointed by each board trustee and six members appointed by the interim superintendent. It is charged with drafting the DOI plan for the district. A full list of committee members is available at our website. Several Board committees provided updates at the meeting. Notably, the Board’s Police Function Ad Hoc Committee, which is tasked with developing a workshop to examine the role of policing in the district to confront systemic racism, will meet for the first time tomorrow, October 15, at 12:30 pm.
The bulk of the Board’s work in the past few months has been focused on developing its Theory of Action and Board goals. The Board’s Community Engagement Committee will host one last opportunity for community feedback tomorrow, October 15, at 5 pm. These goals are one of the most important responsibilities of the school board and will drive the district for the next five years. The Board plans to vote on their finalized goals at a special meeting on October 22 so that the district can begin monitoring progress on student outcomes in November.
