Trustee Report Cards
January 14, 2021
On Thursday, January 14, the Houston ISD Board of Trustees met for its monthly public business meeting. As outlined in our Navigator, Trustees were expected to elect new board officers for the 2021 calendar year. Unfortunately, the nine Trustees could not reach a decision on a new board President after 10 rounds of voting. We must note that the 45-minutes spent on student outcomes, though it represents 27% of their open meeting time, was dwarfed by the nearly 3 hours trustees spent across two closed sessions to discuss officer elections. The grueling process – and lack of any actual result – made it clear that there are deep divisions on the Board, which are actively getting in the way of progress and pulling focus away from students. The board is scheduled to meet on Thursday, January 21, to vote again.
