Last Thursday, the Houston ISD School Board met for its monthly public meeting. Every item – and amendment – on the agenda passed unanimously. Despite this display of board unity, the tension between the Board and many community members was only exacerbated by the limited available seating (over half of the chairs were reserved for district administrators and special guests) and a meeting structure that only allowed for public comment after a 2.5-hour wait. Although many parents and citizens continue to be concerned about the fate of HISD, we are encouraged that the Board has finally taken the first step in requesting an external performance audit. Trustees also took a step toward greater equity in the district by providing students in Third Ward with direct access to the magnet program at Baylor College of Medicine at Ryan Middle School.
