On Thursday, the HoustonISD School Board convened for its monthly public meeting. With Superintendent Carranza’s departure from HISD later this month, we look to the board to provide strong leadership and stability for our district now more than ever. In addition to appointing a new superintendent, the board is still responsible to map out a plan for the 10 schools that have been in “Improvement Required” (IR) status for four or more years and manage a $115 million budget shortfall. Although two trustees were absent from the meeting last week, board members were able to make some strides toward keeping the district on track by scheduling workshops to address school funding and the plans for IR schools. We continue to be concerned that the board has not yet approved an external performance audit; however, we are likely to see a vote on that matter in April. The Houston GPS team will keep you posted on upcoming meetings and events.
