Last Thursday, the Houston ISD Board of Education held the first board meeting of 2018. The meeting began with an election of new officers, and Trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones was elected to be the new board president. Because January is School Board Recognition Month, we would like to acknowledge the entire board for their commitment and dedication to the students of Houston. As unpaid elected officials, they take on a tremendous task in setting policy for our school district.
We should note, however, that the Board still has yet to contract with an external organization to conduct a performance audit of the budget. This is a crucial component of setting new structure and policy for the year ahead. We hope the board will act on this matter soon and wish them the best of luck for this upcoming year.
