Ratings for the Meeting on June 11

On Thursday, June 11, the Houston ISD Board of Education met via Zoom for its monthly public business meeting. In addition to discussing updates on the District’s response to the COVID-19 situation, trustees approved major changes to the in-district charter policy and approved the district operating budget for the 2020-2021 school year. We have been looking to the board to pass a budget that maintains or increases direct funding to schools (PUA), that limits any costs to be covered by fund balance, and that fully aligns with established district goals (Core Value: Stewardship). Thankfully, the board was able to pass such a budget on Thursday evening. While this budget is a step in the right direction, several community members and trustees expressed concern about the use of the Houston ISD police force in schools. We share their concern and look forward to seeing the board and administration implement student and community-centered reforms as soon as they reconvene later this summer.
